Describe your research in about 200 words.

My area of research is algebraic geometry. It is the study of geometric shapes defined by polynomial equations. For example, x=y defines a line and x^2+y^2=1 defines a circle. The amazing hidden geometric structures behind these polynomial functions intrigued me from the very beginning of my undergraduate years, and I was fortunate to learn more about them throughout my masters and PhD studies. Currently I am mostly interested in the study of “singular points” which are simply the sharp corners of these geometric shapes, and their algebraic and geometric properties.

What’s the most interesting thing you have learned from a student?

I once had a student who told me that he loves math because it is objective and does not depend on anyone else’s opinion. I found this point of view very interesting.
