Describe your research in about 200 words.

My research generally examines how federal and state policies affect healthcare access and use in the United States, with a particular focus on maternal and reproductive healthcare and on healthcare access among American Indian and Alaska Native populations. I am interested in understanding how federal and state policies (e.g., Medicaid expansion and abortion bans) either improve outcomes or contribute to health disparities for historically underserved populations. Leveraging administrative and publicly available data, my research has explored how federal- and state-level policies affect access to postpartum contraceptive care and abortion care.

What’s the most interesting thing you have learned from a student?

Several years ago, a former student and I got to talking about Venezuela, where some of his family still lives. He shared some of their lived experiences with me, such as the hours-long grocery lines and the exorbitant cost of basic necessities. Hearing these stories from a student, about people he loved, gave me a deeper understanding of the human suffering that was, and still is, going on there.
