Describe your research in about 200 words.
My research focuses on emerging technology and the law. As science fiction becomes reality, advances in the quantum realm, cyborg technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, and computing will challenge existing legal frameworks. Artificial intelligence is a great example: it’s already created significant legal changes in copyright, elections, transportation, discrimination, privacy, and the criminal law (to name a few). My scholarship explores how those technologies might push the law in unexpected or unintended ways.
What’s the most interesting thing you have learned from a student?
The most interesting thing that I’ve learned from a student isn’t a singular idea but rather the wealth of different experiences and perspectives that students bring to the classroom. While it’s my duty to ensure my students learn the content I’m teaching, the challenge of connecting that content to experiences and perspectives that are different than mine is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a professor.
