I explore how language and literature shape the way we see the world, arguing that this is most evident at sites of linguistic friction. Grounded in modern Japanese literature, criticism, and Russo–Japanese literary relations, I examine how languages, literatures, and cultural concepts interact in periods of flux. I treat translation as an active, interdisciplinary site where people prototype newly emerging concepts to perceive the world.

What’s the most interesting thing you have learned from a student?

The contextually bound nature of the humanities. “Critical thinking” is an easy buzzword, but re-reading and reshaping a text is an urgent necessity for every reader.
