Describe your research in about 200 words.
I am a mathematics teacher educator who looks at interdisciplinary connections with mathematics and citizenship. My research explores how can mathematics and mathematics education can be used to help learners of all ages to become informed, engaged, and empowered community members. My most recent research projects have focused on mathematics teacher educators’ conceptualizations of citizenship and preservice teachers’ use of statistical literacy skills to deepen their understanding of civic issues. I have also explored how mathematical modeling can be used to foster democratic habits.
What’s the most interesting thing you have learned from a student?
Learning about students’ experiences– both in and out of the classroom – is interesting to me, because I can see how those experiences shape their views about math, about education, and about life.
