Describe your research in about 200 words.
Across my scholarship and teaching, I study historically marginalized students’ (e.g., emergent bilinguals) lived experiences through the lens of narrative inquiry and culturally sustaining pedagogy to provide a more humanizing space for developing their writing skills and their multiple rich identities in K-12 spaces. My research and teaching interests include critical curriculum theory; practitioner research; culturally sustaining pedagogy; narrative inquiry and sociocultural aspects of language development and education.
What’s the most interesting thing you have learned from a student?
The importance of the smells of our childhoods! Perhaps to bring back memories of home and our past lived experiences. This was shared in a story of a student of mine, who was from Pakistan, and it reminded me of the little things in life that we, oftentimes, take for granted.
