Describe your research in about 200 words.

I am a speech-language pathologist committed to improving rehabilitation outcomes and healthcare services for stroke survivors with aphasia, a debilitating communication disorder with lasting adverse effects on quality of life. I am especially interested in developing interventions for Spanish speakers with aphasia. My research career has focused on 1) developing culturally- and linguistically-specific aphasia interventions; and 2) improving the efficacy and accessibility of aphasia treatments.

What’s the most interesting thing you have learned from a student?

I have learned too many interesting things from my students; I particularly enjoy learning about their cultural traits. I have experienced that an interest in culture opens opportunities to cultivate a mentor/mentee relationship. For example, while working with a Filipina student, we realized that our cultures shared similar food flavors (traced to Spanish colonizers in the Philippines). We had the opportunity to share some food in our mentorship meetings, and it was interesting to learn that despite the geographical distance between Latin America and the Philippines, we had similar food tastes.
