Michael Domínguez, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Education Thought and Sociocultural Studies at the University of New Mexico, and serves as Special Assistant to the Dean for Equity and Inclusion in the College of Education and Human Sciences. His research and teaching interests focus on Chicana/o/x and BIPoC youth studies, decolonial theory in schooling and education, K-12 ethnic studies, and the sociology of sports and race. He is particularly interested in the possibilities and tensions of teaching ethnic studies at the K-12 level, the schooling and life experiences of historically marginalized youth, how decolonial and critical frameworks can inform teacher praxis, as well as the intersection of youth sports, race, and culturally sustaining pedagogy.
His current community-based partnerships include ethnic studies teacher support partnerships, a long-term ethnographic study of pedagogy in youth athletic spaces, and burgeoning work on culturally sustaining praxis in New Mexico’s rural schools. His work has been published widely, including in the Ethnic Studies Review, Harvard Educational Review, and Journal of Teacher Education, and he is co-author of Decolonizing Middle Level Literacy Instruction (2023).
