Describe your research in about 200 words.
As a practicing American Sign Language interpreter, my focus is on field work and how my interpreting experience can guide my teaching practices. I hope to set the foundation for students to understand more about the Deaf community and provide insights into what it means to be an interpreter and ally for the diverse ASL community.
What’s the most interesting thing you have learned from a student?
One of the most impactful things I have learned from my students is that it is okay to show them I am not perfect and do not know everything (as we all are human). This leads to more honest open discussions allowing for richer learning experiences. On a fun note, I love learning of new places to eat around Albuquerque from my students and their awesome food recommendations.
