STEM Shoutout: Dr. Liping Yang

UNM Geography and Environmental Studies department welcomes new faculty to study data-driven analytics in geographic information science

 

Dr. Liping Yang will be joining the University of New Mexico Geography and Environmental Studies department as an assistant professor in January 2020. 

 

According to her personal website, she is passionate about data-driven analytics in geographic information science and data science. She said that her work lies at the intersection of geographic information science, computer science and mathematics. 

 

“I plan to continue developing novel methods in geospatial data science and apply my already published and to be developed methods to geospatial and geography domain problems, such as water and forest management, which are essential in New Mexico,” Yang said. 

 

Yang received a PhD in Spatial Information Science and Engineering from the University of Maine in 2015. 

 

Yang is currently working at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a postdoctoral research associate in the Information Sciences group of the Computer, Computational and Statistical Sciences Division. At the lab, she focuses on computer vision and machine learning algorithm development.
