Describe your research in about 200 words.

I am interested in applying the asset/deficit model of educational outcomes to the ways in which emergent bilinguals negotiate English spelling conventions using knowledge from their first languages. I am also interested in the ways in which rural communities that host industries that employ a large number of immigrants address the academic language needs of the children of the immigrant workers.

What’s the most interesting thing you have learned from a student?

The most interesting thing I’ve learned from students is the proper way for Native students to introduce themselves prior to a giving a presentation to the class. I find this practice powerful and humbling for the presenter and for the audience.
