Faculty Fanfare: Sharon Nepstad
UNM Distinguished Professor of Sociology Sharon Erickson Nepstad has received a Fulbright
Specialist Award at the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora in Brazil, where she will offer workshops on academic writing and publishing.
Nepstad also will also meet with faculty to develop recommendations and strategies to increase their departmental ranking within Brazil’s public university system.
During her time at the federal public university in the state of Minas Gerais, Nepstad also will explore possibilities for developing an exchange partnership between UNM and the university.
“I’m looking forward to supporting the social sciences programs at Juiz de Fora as they seek to strengthen their research and scholarship,” Nepstad said.
“I also believe that UNM would benefit by building partnerships with our academic counterparts in Brazil since the nation is particularly important in the areas of environmental preservation and climate change, the global economy, and political developments.”
Nepstad is one of over 400 U.S. citizens who share expertise with host institutions abroad through the Fulbright Specialist Program each year.
Recipients of Fulbright Specialist awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, demonstrated leadership in their field, and their potential to foster long-term cooperation between institutions in the United States and abroad.
