Describe your research in about 200 words.

My research interests include big data, online media engagement, strategic management of online media, journalistic use of social media, and media ethics. My research was published or is accepted for publication in prestigious journals including Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism Practice, Journal of Media Ethics, and Newspaper Research Journal. I also wrote a chapter on media engagement in The Handbook of Communication Engagement. I serve on the editorial board of Newspaper Research Journal. I reviewed manuscripts for many journals including International Journal on Media Management, Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, and Journal of Information Policy. I am heavily involved in interdisciplinary research. My partnership with a team of computer science professor and graduate students at the University of Mississippi resulted in over half a dozen conference presentations. We presented at Computation+Journalism, IEEE/ACM International Conference on Advances in Social Networks Analysis and Mining, AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Annual Conference of the International Communication Association, and AEJMC Midwinter Conference. Our research on misleading content resulted in a Google Chrome extension for clickbait detection called BaitBuster. We are currently working on exciting media projects.

What’s the most interesting thing you have learned from a student?

“I am awesome and incredible, but not that awesome and not that incredible!”
