Stephanie Forrest
Title with Advance at UNM:
Co-principal investigator
Why were you attracted to this project?
For the first 15 years of my career at UNM, I was the only tenure-stream female faculty member, and when I joined UNM there was only one other female faculty member in the entire college. I have seen firsthand the impediments that women face progressing through the academic ranks and feel it is time to address the problem institutionally and systematically, rather than with pointwise efforts.
Your background in academia:
Stephanie is a regents distinguished professor of computer science at UNM and a member of the Santa Fe Institute external faculty. She was educated at St. John’s College (B.A., 1977) and the University of Michigan (M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science, 1982, 1985). Before joining UNM in 1990, she worked for Teknowledge Inc. and was a director’s fellow at the Center for Nonlinear Studies at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. At UNM, she served as department chair from 2006-2011, and at SFI she served as interim vice president for academic affairs and co-chair of the Science Board. In 2013 and 2014, she was a Jefferson Science Fellow advising the U.S. Department of State on cyber policy. She has received many awards and honors, including: the Stanislaw Ulam Memorial Lectures (2013), the ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award (2011), and the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award (1991).
What’s that one cool thing about you?
I was a member of the 1973 U.S. Ski Team, and won the 1972 U.S. Alpine National Championships.
