Several recent studies have shown that faculty are more stressed than ever as they balance teaching and research with managing student and personal emotions during complicated times. Counseling, Assistance and Referral Services (CARS)

Type of support offered: Individual and couples counseling; supervisor/manager consultations; coaching; department in-service training; seminars and workshops; internal and external resource suggestions and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) services.

For: faculty and staff and their domestic partners; UNM retirees

Topics: Personal and occupational relationship difficulties; career concerns; stress and job burnout; anxiety and depression, grieving and loss in personal or workplace settings, alcohol or drug abuse, managing change, preparing for retirement and negotiating organizational systems and others.

At a glance: UNM CARS provides free, confidential and voluntary help by Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors and Licensed Clinical Social Workers for faculty, staff and their domestic partners; UNM retirees.

UNM Ombuds Services

Type of support offered: Free, confidential and informal support with problem solving in individual visits, and mediation/facilitated conversations.  Also, group facilitation, and workshops for collaborative problem solving and constructive communication skills development. 

For: faculty, staff, graduate students

Topics: Confidential support for collaborative problem solving, and for navigating UNM systems and resources, workshops for constructive conflict management and communication skills.

At a glance: The UNM Ombuds Services team helps faculty, staff or students by providing a confidential, skilled, and neutral listener to help you assess and better understand your situation and help you create an action plan. Ombuds can help you to clarify your concerns and goals, gain perspective on your options and resources. An Ombuds visit is also a safe place to vent and think out loud about what you need, and how you might like to move forward. 

Examples of situations where Ombuds Services would provide their services include working with UNM employees or graduate students who are navigating change, managing conflict, or looking to improve morale or strengthen collaboration.

UNM Employee Wellness

Type of support offered: health and wellness events, workshops, nutrition, fitness and health and wellness counseling, online resources

For: faculty, staff, graduate students

Topics: Workplace conflicts and productivity challenges 

At a glance: This office promotes all types of wellness, including emotional, financial, nutritional, physical and workplace wellness. Offerings include occasional outdoor yoga classes, flu shot clinics, workshops on Medicare and Zoom workouts and stretch breaks. It also offers a Wellness Ambassador program.
